A warrant officer is a type of title used in a military or service organization for a specialized type of personnel who are not commissioned officers, but carry an officer's responsibility due to advanced technical skills. Warrant officers may hold a place in command hierarchy equal or subordinate to those with officer ranks, and in command of enlisted personnel. A basic warrant officer may be moved ahead in grade as a warrant officer first class and master warrant officer. The most senior grade of warrant officer is chief warrant officer.

Starfleet warrant officersEdit

The Federation Starfleet of the 23rd and 24th centuries had a series of warrant officer ranks for technical specialists.

In the 2260s, a Starfleet warrant officer wore a sleeve braid insignia of a single silver broken stripe, about half as narrow as an officer's rank insignia stripe. (FASA RPG module: Cadet's Orientation Sourcebook)

The Cadet's Orientation manual did not mention the additional warrant officer ranks expanded on in later sourcebooks, but it could be supposed that 2260s first class or master WOs either did not exist yet, or that they all wore this same basic insignia.
