Wellman was a Starfleet officer who served aboard the USS Enterprise during the 2260s.

In 2268, Wellman was part of Captain James T. Kirk and a landing party to the surface of Angrena following an explosion in the colony's mines. Doctor Leonard McCoy took Wellman and Reyes to the colony's operations center to begin treating the injured personnel that were being housed there. (TOS - Uchu comic: "Art of War")

By 2270 Wellman was serving as the Enterprise's quarterdeck officer. In this year, Wellman contacted Captain Kirk to inform him that Rowena Mason had boarded the ship and that all of her equipment had been stowed away. (TOS novel: Corona)
