The Westmoreland was a Federation scout ship in service in the 23rd century. The Westmoreland was a small four-man craft which wasn't equipped with artificial gravity systems.

In 2266 the Westmoreland was discovered adrift and her crew were all dead, with evidence that they had ripped each other apart with their bare hands. The investigators concluded that the crew had came down with a severe case of space cafard.

The year of her recovery is based on the current stardate of 3475.3 (in 2267) given in the book, and McCoy's line saying the ship was found "last year".

The following year, McCoy cited the incident with the Westmoreland during a conversation with Captain James T. Kirk about the USS Enterprise needing shore leave to alleviate boredom. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)
