In 2379, Witmer was part of the strike team that traveled to Anara-Zel aboard the runabout USS Tunguska to capture a contraband cargo shipment intended to implicate the Tholians in the construction of the nadion-pulse cannons on Tezwa. As the team entered the building, two shots of plasma bursts from Tezwan insurgents struck Witmer, nearly severing his left arm. (TNG novel: A Time to Heal)
