Before he was an officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise...

Publisher's description[]

Cadet Worf arrived at Starfleet Academy as the first Klingon to gain entrance since the Federation-Klingon Peace Treaty. Raised on Earth by human parents, Worf wonders is he is still a Klingon, the proud member of an honorable warrior race, or is he more...human? Where does he fit in?

Command-level classes fill his schedule, but nothing prepares him for his fellow cadets, among them his human foster brother. Intelligent, ambitious, and confident, the Academy cadets make life difficult for the young warrior. How can he win over his classmates - including the always logical Vulcans and the fierce Brikar - if they are still trained to think of him as the enemy?

When a routine trip to a training satellite turns into an unexpected disaster, Worf must unite the cadets and risk his life before a terrible accident destroys the entire mission!

Summary[]

Worf Rozhenko and his adopted brother Simon begin attending Starfleet Academy and instantly clashes with Zak Kebron, a Brikar who mistrusts Klingons because of stories he has heard about them. The academy staff had already predicted they wouldn't get on, so they have been assigned as roommates in the hope they will get used to each other.

Simon pulls together a study group but Worf ignores the friendly overtures of Tania Tobias, who knows of his history because her father served on the Intrepid, believing she only sees him as a curiosity. He also fails to pick up on the fact Simon is struggling with life at the academy.

Worf humiliates Kebron during a self-defence class and Kebron retaliates by getting most of their classmates to emphasise Federation-Klingon hostilities during combat discussion. Ensign Geordi La Forge, who has just graduated from the academy, suggests to Worf that he might help cadets learn how to cope with the unknown and recommends he volunteers for the Prometheus Run, which involves a trip to an ancient space station, Prometheus, for routine checks.

A faulty circuit means the cadets are unaware of a Romulan attack until the last minute. With the station badly damaged and then supervising officer Clark dead, Worf attempts to lead the other cadets to the shuttlebay but fails and the station explodes...revealing it was merely a holo-programme, designed to test reactions to life and death situations.

Simon, who fell apart during the apparent crisis, chooses to leave the academy, having realised it isn't for him. Despite both denying it, Worf and Kebron start to get along.
