The Xhosa was an Antares-class freighter that was operated by Kasidy Yates in the 2370s. (ST reference: Star Trek Chronology, CCG set: Call to Arms[citation needed])

History

In the year 2372, the Xhosa left Deep Space 9 and was followed by IKS M'Char, a Klingon bird-of-prey. Twelve Klingons were killed when the Xhosa went to warp just as they were beaming over, having been exposed to space. Kaybok had been ordered to place an explosive aboard, but his crew were unable to do so. (DS9 episode & novelization: The Way of the Warrior)

The M'Char made preparations to board the Xhosa but retreated when the USS Defiant threatened to fire on the Klingon ship. (DS9 episode & novelization: The Way of the Warrior)

Later that year, the Xhosa began running medical supplies to the Maquis, meeting their ships in the Badlands. Benjamin Sisko commanded the Defiant when following the Xhosa on one of its runs to meet the Maquis, but learned Michael Eddington had used Sisko's involvement with Yates to get him off DS9 so the Maquis could steal several industrial replicators. (DS9 episode: "For the Cause")

In 2376, Yates used the Xhosa in the evacuation of Europa Nova, specifically the city of Chieti, and brought the Europani to Deep Space 9. (DS9 novel: Demons of Air and Darkness)

In preparation for when Yates would give birth and in case of transporter unavailability, Nog modified an escape pod from the Xhosa and placed it behind her house in Kendra Province for her to use as a last resort. (DS9 novel: Twilight)

Destruction

The freighter was destroyed during a battle at Deep Space 9 involving Typhon Pact forces when a Tzenkethi ship slammed into it, causing the warp core to breach. The ship was lost with all hands; however, Kasidy Yates was onboard the station at the time. Believing his wife to be aboard the Xhosa at the time of its destruction, Benjamin Sisko watched from the bridge of the USS Robinson. (Typhon Pact novel: Plagues of Night)
